Hard water and shower glass in El Paso
El Paso Water describes city water as moderately hard to hard. Those minerals are what leave white spots and haze on shower glass, so it is worth planning for them before you buy a new door.
How hard is El Paso water?
In its published chemical analysis, El Paso Water puts average hardness at roughly 175 mg/L as calcium carbonate, or about 10.2 grains per gallon.
The utility blends river water, several well fields and desalinated groundwater, so the figure changes by neighborhood and season.
Its source averages run from about 63 mg/L for water from the desalination plant up to roughly 236 mg/L for some well and river sources.
Some suburbs get water from other utilities, and rural homes on private wells can differ a lot, so a home test kit gives the best number for your tap.
What hard water does to glass
When shower water evaporates, calcium and magnesium stay behind as a thin white film.
Left alone, that film builds up and bonds to the surface, and over time it can etch the glass so that it never looks fully clear again.
Frames, tracks and hinge plates collect the same scale, which can make sliders stick.
Protective glass coatings
Many glass shops offer a factory-applied or professionally applied coating that makes water bead and sheet off the surface.
These coatings do not stop minerals completely, but they make spots far easier to wipe away.
Ask each installer which coating they use, whether it is applied at the factory or on site, and what warranty or care instructions come with it.
Daily habits that help
A quick pass with a squeegee after each shower removes most of the water before it can dry.
Leave the door or a window open so the bathroom dries faster.
For cleaning, follow the glass or coating maker's instructions, since some harsh or abrasive cleaners can damage a coating.

Questions
Will a water softener protect my glass?
A whole-home softener reduces the minerals that cause spots, though it is a separate purchase with its own upkeep. El Paso Water notes that it does not recommend softeners for drinking water, so many households soften only some of their lines or rely on glass coatings and a squeegee instead.
Can old etched glass be restored?
Light buildup can usually be removed. Deep etching often cannot be fully reversed, and replacement may be the better option.
